Global cities contain a lot of influence from other countries or cities in terms of culture, politics, and economics. People who live in global cities experience the urban landscape more different than those who do not. Developed cities enjoy the fruits of globalization, but the developing countries do not necessarily enjoy the fruits of global cities. Global cities have numerous positive impacts, but they are plagued by a negative side making global cities a very contradictory concept. For example, in the case of Japan, its growth has been because of its global cities and especially Tokyo, which has been the hub of development for decades. Therefore, global cities are directly linked to globalization because they are a prerequisite and incentive for globalization. Global cities provide capital, supply, and demand as well opportune cities and markets. Derudder (2012) says that global cities or world cities are important to globalization because they amplify change. The world is increasingly becoming a global village by virtue of interconnectedness and the breakdown of boundaries in terms of culture, economics, and politics. Global cities are very important aspects of globalization. For example, London, New York, and Hong Kong are well-known global cities because they offer global competitiveness for their citizens and are highly influential in the running of the world as a whole. Global cities are important for globalization because they cover the different aspects of globalization which are political, economic, and social. Global cities have multi-national companies, good infrastructure, diverse populations, well-educated citizens, and structured political institutions that are linker=d with other parts of the globe. Sassen (2013) further explains that a global city controls power, wealth, and influence over other countries in the world. According to Sassen (2013), a global city is well designed and organized to be an important contributor to the world economy. Hong Kong, for example, is a global city.

For a city to be considered global, it must have ideas and values that will affect and impact the whole world. Globalization leads to the emergence of global cities, whereas these cities may also impact globalization. In today’s world, globalization takes place in the areas where many people are living and working in cities.
